Selena Gomez Opens Up About Her Incurable Disease

In 2013 Selena Gomez had to cancel her tour halfway through. The reason: she was diagnosed with an incurable autoimmune disease.

As many of you may remember, Selena had an abrupt end to her last tour. When she decided to open up about that time in her life she spoke to GQ and released this statement:

“First off, this is something that everyone always wants to fixate on. I got diagnosed with lupus… I just needed time to be okay… It’s really frustrating, because I am 100 percent allowed to have that”

For those of you that don’t know, Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that tells the immune system to attack vital parts of the body, like tissues and organs. Often, and what seemingly happened to Selena, the disease can attack in waves and present itself with fatigue, joint and muscle pain, and shortness of breath. Each wave can have varying degrees of intensity and the timing is unpredictable. Not knowing why you can’t catch your breath in the middle of a concert sounds justifiably scary.

What’s worse: the disease has no cure. While Selena was getting treatment for her recently diagnosed lupus, the media spun that into stories about rehab and drug abuse. The entire time, Selena was getting chemotherapy to try to help alleviate some of the more devastating symptoms.

Today, Selena Gomez is ready to move past this time in her life. While these troubling times did inspire her Revival album, Gomez is ready to leave them in the past:

“My past seems to be way more fascinating for people than my future, which bums me out… I don’t ever really like to sit and dwell on what that experience was. Was it fun? No. Is it fun to have [lupus]? No.”

Though some media outlets still want to dwell over her 2013 struggles, Selena Gomez has already started to lay a foundation for a strong future.

2016 has been quite the year for this young superstar. She has become the most followed person on Instagram with over 74 million followers world-wide. Her album, Revival, was a best-seller and was still earning serious airtime before her scheduled May world-tour. She’s even broken into the fashion world with her “Dream Out Loud” clothing line.

It looks like the future is bright for this young star. While she has a new struggle to deal with during her day to day life, she’s fighting harder than ever to establish herself as one of this generation’s most talented artists.
